More and more people use mobile gadgets to access online content, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is constantly growing. To meet this demand, the organization that oversees the generic top-level domain extensions, ICANN, introduced the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the notion behind this TLD is that all websites that use it should comply with specific restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites must be built to be viewed without problems by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” established by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These incorporate how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The regulations have raised some questions given that the TLD is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be created in such a way as to be opened by most browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
