Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, is a protocol used to encode the data exchanged between a web server and its users. The practical application of using an SSL is to secure the info which site visitors submit on your Internet site - a login page, a payment page if you run a web-based store, and so forth. Any data they input in any box on the site will be submitted safely and securely to the server, so their login or payment details will be protected from being accessed by unauthorized people. Usually, an SSL certificate requires a dedicated IP address to be set up, which means the overall cost for your presence online shall be bigger. While this may not be a problem for a larger business, it might matter for a non-profit organization or a small online store which does not generate big revenue if additional money should be spent. That is the key reason why we've taken advantage of an extension known as Server Name Indication (SNI) and we've made it possible to use a shared server IP address to install an SSL certificate.

Shared SSL IP in Shared Hosting

A shared IP can be used for any SSL certificate, no matter if you purchase it from us or from a different vendor and regardless of the shared hosting package you have on our end. If you obtain the SSL from us, you will find this option on the certificate order page within your hosting Control Panel where you can also take full advantage of the 1-click automatic configuration option that we offer. If the latter is picked within the SSL order wizard, our system shall install and set up everything for you using the specifically configured server shared IP, thus once you acquire and approve the SSL, there won't be anything else to do on your end. You'll be able to save the funds you will otherwise have to pay for a dedicated IP address and the SSL shall function in the same exact way, so any information the site visitors submit shall be encoded. The only difference is that if you input the shared IP address instead of your domain name in an Internet browser, the website shall not display.

Shared SSL IP in Semi-dedicated Hosting

The shared IP option is available with all semi-dedicated hosting and the setup takes only 2 clicks within the hosting CP regardless if you order an SSL via our company or from a third-party supplier. There shall not be any difference in terms of how the certificate functions or encodes the information that your visitors submit, so your Internet site will be protected without having to spend any additional funds for a dedicated IP address. The one thing that'll be different is that https://the-shared-IP will not open your site, unlike https://the-dedicated-IP, but it is extremely unlikely that anyone will ever try to access your internet site in this way rather than inputting your domain name. In addition, we offer an auto-configuration option for the SSLs bought through our company and if you select it and you choose to use a shared IP as opposed to a dedicated one, our system will set everything up the minute the SSL is approved and issued with no need for any action on your end.
